Timeline for Deployment:
Summer 2017
General Information:
The successful applicant will join a cross-cultural team composed of nationals and North Americans—single women, married couples with children, and retirees. Team meetings are bilingual to ensure everyone’s participation.
This ministry focuses on developing key church leaders. To facilitate this goal, the team runs an educational consulting business, relying on local and expat volunteers to teach classes to clients. Although the ability to contribute to the business platform varies from person to person, everyone is expected to commit to help the team function optimally.
Work and Living Environment:
The team is located in a rapidly growing city of 9 million people. Housing is in riverside apartments, with a natural landscape to enjoy, and within walking distance of teammates and the office. Main transportation is by subway, bus, taxi, motor scooters, or bikes. Grocery shopping is conveniently located.
Status of Christian Witness:
To varying degrees the team is involved with a large local church. There are a number of churches throughout the city, yet many people have never heard the good news. The number of Christians in this city has increased in recent years; a local seminary serving six provinces is located here through which the team has opportunity to mentor future international workers and leaders. In some areas of the country there are no Christians.
Language Expectations:
Language ability is essential to ministry. Those who do not know the local language will attend language study. International workers receive two years of intensive language and cultural study. The goal is to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level.
Health Considerations:
Lots of walking will be required. Stairs are common, and there is limited wheelchair access. Weather consists of damp, cold winters and hot, humid summers (fall and spring are pleasant). Periodic poor air quality can agitate asthma.
Expectations for Spouse:
The successful applicant’s spouse is expected to engage meaningfully in fulfilling ministry objectives based on his/her gifts, training, the team’s needs, and their family’s needs. Opportunities other than teaching English are available. The team desires people to serve where they feel they best fit.
Children’s Educational Plan and Options:
Educational options include an excellent Christian-run international school in the city, local schools, and homeschooling.
Compensation Package:
This position is designated to be fully funded through the Great Commission Fund (GCF). Please visit our compensation page for details on how U.S. Alliance international workers are supported. We offer a comprehensive package for this position, covering all costs related to a monthly living allowance, housing, travel, children’s education, and full benefits. GCF-funded workers share responsibility for raising GCF dollars from Alliance churches and other sources.
